11 Football League v St. Nicks
Venue: Glen Rovers
Glenville returned to winning ways on Saturday, overcoming the Dublin Hill side in their back yard. After being defeated by Mallow the previous Saturday it was important that this promising Glenville side regained their momentum in this league.
Numbers were tight today with many of our key players out on Holy Communion duty. Regardless we managed to get 18 young players together, including 9 year old Fionn FitzGerald, and 8 year old Donnacha O’Leary. It would have been acceptable for these two players to simply make up the numbers, however both players were hugely beneficial to their teams and were well able to mix it with players up to three years older than them!
Team 1 lined up with solid players in every line. Joseph O’Riordan is looking very promising in goal in every game he plays, and with Brendan Lehane, Eanna FitGerald and Patrick Ryan lining up in front of him there was very little ball getting through to him. In midfield today we had Colm O’Regan and Ciaran O’Leary who were at their best. Up front then featured Fionn and Donnacha, along with Ben Sullivan who was a thorn in the St Nicks side all day long.
In Team 2 Michael O’Driscoll and Donal Sheehan were rock solid as usual in defence. Ciaran O’Riordan, Ross Hennessy and Liam Foley were excellent at carrying ball throughout the game, and "the Nicks” had no answer to them. Jamie Curtain, Darragh Casey, Colin Healy and Ben Flanagan made up a formidable forward line that terrorised the St Nicks defence.
In the end it was two comfortable wins for both Glenville teams. Team 1 were up against a very physical St Nicks side, and the likes of Ciaran O’Leary and Brendan Lehane in particular will probably be boasting a few nasty bruises in school this week. They ran out 4:6 to 3:1 in the end. There was no such problems for Team 2, who won out in the end 6:9 to 0:2.
The U11 have a break from football next week. Up next is Midleton in Glenville on Saturday the 30th June.
