Glenville 0-11
St Catherine's 1-7
Our Junior A Footballers have now advanced to the quarter final stage of the East Cork Championship. They set up a meeting against Erin's Own on Saturday May 2nd after completing a championship double over "The Saints". Both Teams met in the first round at the end of March. That game ended in a thrilling one point win for Glenville, with William Connolly scoring the winning point at the death. Who would have guessed that three weeks later history would repeat itself in the 3rd round.
Glenville decided to play against the breeze in the first half took control of the game from the start. A Diarmuid McCarthy point after 40 seconds had us up and running, and, other than a St Catherine's equaliser, for the next eighteen minutes it was all Glenville. We dominated the midfield area especially with David Quirk catching every ball that came his way and three William Connolly points in a row had us 0-4 to 0-1 up on 20 minutes. Glenville were unable to keep up this frantic pace however and with a string of unanswered St Catherine's points, the score was 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval.
The second half sprung into life as St Catherine's got the opening goal of the game after 15 seconds. They followed up with a lovely point leaving Glenville five points down. William Connolly soon calmed the Glenville nerves down with a pointed free on 40 minutes as the gap was down to 4 points. St Catherine’s responded to the Connolly point as they worked a well taken point to increase their lead back out to five points with only 15 minutes on the clock. This was to be the last score of the game for the Saints.
Glenville decide to freshen out their bench and bring on subs Darragh O' Callaghan, Johnny Dorgan, and Aaron Collins. Brendan Maloney added his name to score sheet with the score of the game as Glenville were beginning to reduce the gap to just 4 points. Our substitutions were working perfectly especially Aaron Collins who was causing havoc for the Catherine's back every time he got on the ball and he set up Willie O'Leary who put the ball straight between the posts as the deficit was now to just three points with five minutes remaining. There was a new look with in the Glenville team as they found renewed hope and renewed energy and two brilliant Willie O'Leary Points in the space of two minute had the gap down to the minimum with time almost up. From the kick out saw Ger Cahill win the breaking ball which set Glenville on the move and who better than Brendán Maloney to hit the point that would put the team’s level in the first minute of injury time. It was always going to take something special to win a championship game and yes history has repeated itself as William Connolly hit over the winning score as Glenville ran out winners on a score line of Glenville 0-11 St Catherine's 1-7.
Well done lads on what was a brilliant game of Gaelic football and well done to St Catherine's who put up a mighty battle.
Glenville will now face Erin’s Own in the quarter final on Saturday May 2nd.
